Fiordland has been described as "New Zealand's Jurassic Park", a prehistoric wilderness of mountains, forests, lakes, waterfalls and fiords. Is it any wonder it earned the status of New Zealand's first UNESCO World Heritage Site? Depart Dunedin and fly north-westover the golden plains and schist mountains of Central Otago, Clutha River and Lake Wanaka to Mount Aspiring, 'Tititea - the shining peak'. We will circle the ice-clad summit several times before heading to Milford Sound with its giant waterfalls, towering cliffs and much photographed Mitre Peak. You have the option of landing for the famous Mitre Peak photo shot, and a quick lunch break. We do the lazy thing and trek down Milford Track (byplane of course) and gaze in awe at Sutherland Falls, one of the world's highest waterfalls at a mind-boggling 580 metres (1,904 feet). Then it's to the coast and a flyover of all Fiordland's 15 fiords. When over Doubtful Sound we will try and find Browne Falls, a flood-fed waterfall which when 'operating' is 619 metres (2,031 feet) high, challenging the title of its illustrious neighbour, Sutherland Falls. We reach Puysegur Point Lighthouse at the south-west corner of New Zealand, before heading east over Lake Hauroko (New Zealand's deepest lake at 443 metres / 1,453 feet), Te Waewae Bay with views over Foveaux Strait to Rakiura Stewart Island, and the city of Invercargill. We return to Dunedin flyingover the rich farmlands of Southland and South Otago.
